A short documentary on the Amen Break , quite possibly the most widely utilised drum loop in modern electronic music. Chances are you will have heard it before lots of times. And even if you are not interested in this six-second cornerstone, I recommend you listen to this as it makes some very good points about the way that copyright in music has been handled in the past and is handled now and what this means for future musicians wanting to use samples from existing musical works in their music. (Thanks go to P-A-L, who posted this on his Myspace)

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/US/03/26/controversial.cartoon/index.html
(CNN) -- Two leading Jewish watchdog groups are denouncing a prominent cartoonist's illustration about Israel's offensive in Gaza, saying it uses anti-Semitic imagery. The cartoon was published Wednesday in newspapers and on the Internet.
The Anti-Defamation League, which has been fighting anti-Semitism since it was founded in 1913, called the syndicated cartoon by Pulitzer Prize-winning Pat Oliphant "hideously anti-Semitic."
The Simon Wiesenthal Center, which, among other things, fights anti-Semitism and educates people about the Holocaust, said "the cartoon mimics the venomous anti-Semitic propaganda of the Nazi and Soviet eras."
Published Wednesday in newspapers and on the Internet, the cartoon shows the small figure of a woman, labeled Gaza, carrying a child. She is being pursued by a headless, jackbooted figure wielding a sword, marching in an apparent goose-step and pushing a fanged Jewish star on a wheel.
The Anti-Defamation League said the cartoon used "Nazi-like imagery" and a "hateful evocation of the Star of David."
Abraham H. Foxman, the ADL's national director, said the cartoon's "outlandish and offensive use of the Star of David in combination with Nazi-like imagery is hideously anti-Semitic." [...]
magery and rhetoric comparing Israel to Nazis have been deployed by Israel's persistent critics, who decry the Jewish state's treatment of Palestinians as oppressive and brutal. Israel and its supporters defend the state as humane and say it has properly defended itself against attacks.
There has been sharp criticism of Israel's offensive against Hamas militants in Gaza who launched rockets into southern Israeli towns.
Human Rights Watch said Wednesday the Israeli military's firing of white phosphorus shells over densely populated areas during the offensive "was indiscriminate and is evidence of war crimes," a claim denied by Israel.

Everybody's favourite arsehole, Simon Cowell, has gone on record to state that he has been snubbed by the Queen during a reception. Moreover he also claims that His Royal Rudeness, Prince Phillip called him a "sponger" (insert your own joke here). The Palace issued an official reply to this, which read: "The Duke of Edinburgh categorically did not call Mr Cowell a sponger. He has no reason to. He has said he does no know enough about Mr Cowell to make any sort of comment about him. Mr Cowell may have misheard the Duke, he has a very soft voice."

Now, is it just me or does that official statement sound like a really stylish and cool way to say "Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you. I am the grandmaster of insultin people and you should be happy I deemed you worth being insulted by me."? I mean, I am no major fan of the Royal Family, but this just struck me as quite cool.

5:02 pm - "Watchmen"
|
So years and years of discussing and wondering and pondering and expecting came to an end yesterday when the film version of "Watchmen" finally went on general release over here. And I really liked it. As somebody who has only done one concentrated full reading of the original comic (and quite a trip that was, let me tell you) but read a fair bit of the secondary literature as well as re-reading bits and pieces, I have decided that all the hype was pretty much deserved and that this quite simply is the best Alan-Moore-adaptation done so far now*.
( If you have not read the book, here be spoilers )
Obviously, the book adds many more layers, asks many more questions and gives you more to think about but that really is something that books by their very nature have an advantage on compared to mainstream films. There also is no question about Zack Snyder being very interested in things looking flashy (What do you expect from the man who brought you "Himmler's wet dream" "300"?) and maybe the film is a little bit "style over matter" but I did really like the fact that the story pulled no punches and tried its best to not turn into run-of-the-mill Hollywood fare (while referencing Hollywood: "Ride of the Valkyries", anyone?). I mean, imagine this having been done by Michael Bay with Arnold as Dr. Manhattan. See? Scary, innit?
So, full marks.
*Kicking "V for Vendetta" into a deserved second place. But then I guess you could also argue that the list pretty much ends there. "From Hell" is an interesting film in its own right but only really adapted certain assumptions Moore made about the murders. A "proper" adaptation of the book surely would have been a documentary with a certain amount of re-enactments. And "LXG".... come on, let's be honest here. The film took a number of characters Moore also used in "League of extraordinary gentlemen", added some and then did a stupid story with them. Calling this an "adaptation" is using the term very loosely. "Constantine" and "Swamp Thing" will be completely disregarded here, although they have their merits.

Modern mobile phones. Not only do other people expect you to be always available, you also get to feel like every last blip of your opinion is important enough to be always available to the world. Which then leads to shitheads feeling the need to talk and text wherever they are, even if it's in the auditorium of a theatre, where the boundaries of who should be listened to and who should shut up are very clearly delineated.
This was only made worse by all these cameras being included in the phones. Now you are always on display and that strange idiocy that people can be prone to while on camera is everywhere.

3:17 pm - "Life of Brian" to be shown in Aber. Pythons will attend
|
Two Monty Python stars will be at the first screening of their classic film Life of Brian in a town where it has not been seen since a ban 30 years ago.
Terry Jones and Michael Palin will join Aberystwyth mayor Sue Jones-Davies - who also starred in the 1979 film - at a charity showing on 28 March.
Proceeds from March's screening will go to charities nominated by Terry Jones and Ms Jones-Davies.
The two Pythons and the mayor will also hold a question and answer session with fans following a champagne reception and the film. Tickets costing £25 are on sale now, but organisers said only 120 were available.
